the story:

This one is called ‘Mother Sweetest’ because this potion is sweet and crafted with a sweet-tasting ally whose milky elixir is reminiscent of a nourishing mother’s milk. Astragalus is medicine widely used in China. Astragalus serves as an overall tonic for the body, particularly toning the heart and kidneys. As a tonic for the heart, Astragalus increases how much blood the heart can pump (which is limited in instances of heart disease) in people who have complained of chest pain. They strengthen the left side of the heart, the part that is usually sluggish in heart disease, and slow down the heart rate in those whose hearts are beating too fast. In one study, Astragalus even helped people who had just had a heart attack. Within 36 hours of the attack, the herb improved function of the left-side ventricles. There was also reduced oxidation and increased superoxide dismutase (an enzyme that speeds up certain chemical reactions in the body) activity on red blood cells, which is one of the suggestions of Astragalus working as an antioxidant. Huang Chi has also been suggested as one capable of balancing levels of salt and water in the body, thus helping the kidneys function better. Overall findings of Astragalus’s effectiveness on the heart have revealed that employing them for treatment is more effective and has less side effects than conventional drugs prescribed by doctors. This along with its ability to increase sperm motility make it ideal, also, for men’s health maintenance as men tend to experience a higher rate of heart disease and reproductive imbalances  after a certain age. Further elaborating on Astragalus potency, there has been evidence that Huang Ch’i (as Astragalus is known in the Orient) strengthens the primary energy and tonifies what is known as the three burning spaces. As an energizer of the outside of the body, this is one considered a tonic superior to Ginseng for younger people who tend to be more physically active. Huang Ch’i is said to be strengthening, particularly, to the legs and arms, and because of their warm energetic, they are good for people who work outside in locations where the climate gets cooler. Because they energize the outside of the body, Astraglus is used to tonify the protective energy which circulates just under the skin. This energy is the Yang counterpart of a more Yin nutritional energy which flows through the twelve meridians and supplies the organs with vital force. Wei, as this Yang component is known, is generated in the lungs, and after the lungs have extracted chi from the air and the stomach and spleen extract chi from the food, the air and food energies are united in the lung to generate the essential energy. Astragalus, through toning the lungs, especially with the Yang component, helps the body build an abundance of free-flowing Yang chi, thus fortifying the defense mechanism of the body. Astragalus, being a chi tonic, is also a blood tonic (chi moves blood). This helps to regulate fluid metabolism, so regular use of this ally can help to reduce the frequency of bloating and eliminate water retention. Combining this tincture with an infusion of Hawthorn, the blood circulating value of Huang Ch’i increases. When combined with Licorice root infusion, the blood-sugar balancing qualities come forth. Astragalus is also considered an adaptogen which, as depicted above, means that it possesses an ability to help us adapt to and properly cope with stressful situations, allowing us to move through transitions with ease and grace. They remind us of the nourishing mother who fills us with the vitality required to maintain livelihood in all times and through all transitions.
