the story:

Represented by the letter Mem (which means water), and with Mem being one of the 3 Mother letters, Key 12 is associated with the element of water. Similarly to the Fool, there is an element of ‘womb and child’ present - The Hanged Man shows up on the card hanging upside, looking almost as if they were about to be birthed from a womb. Key 12 is the beginning of an important transformation which we see more clearly in Key 13. Reducing 12 to a single digit of 3, we see the numerological resonance that this card has with creative frequencies and expressions. The allies used in this medicine provide both nourishment and protection of these aspects of the self. They also serve as promoting a glimpse into the darker recesses of the mind as impacted by the experiences had, perhaps evidenced through the shadows that can show up in journey through the paths of Key 0-11 - yet by the point we arrive at Key 12, we are clear on the forms that these shadows take and can begin to ‘sacrifice’ our attachment to old behaviors, mental patterns, and even connections that are only slowing down the spiritual evolution. With passionflower as the medicinal ally that I have connected to The Hanged Man, the path of Key 12 is one meant to liberate us from obsessive thinking that keeps one stuck or in spaces that are ultimately stagnating. Passionflower is an excellent plant medicine for those who experience anxiety and for releasing the things we cannot let go of. Passionflower encourages us to slow down in a way that enables us to fully experience the wisdom that is shed through a dark night as The Hanged Man. Key 12, with allies such as Motherwort, Burdock Root, and Mugwort, reminds us that there is nothing to fear. Motherwort is one for the brave of heart and strong in spirit. Motherwort mothers both mother and child - in labor, they can ease childbirth and promote a restfulness in the new parents. When administered through breastmilk (the mother consumes motherwort and the child receives the benefits through the breastmilk), Motherwort can readily relax a fussy baby, for instance. Leonurus cardiaca, as Motherwort is otherwise known, is effective for stabilizing heart conditions such as increased heart rate which may result from anxiety and even stress. As a member of the mint family, they have the effect of ‘cooling’ and and really work well with heat or dampness-related conditions such as indigestion related headaches or menstrual cramping. Mugwort supports the work of Motherwort, targeting digestion, reproductive energy, the heart, and our intuitive centers (womb, gut, heart, 3rd eye, etc). Mugwort, with the support of Burdock root, Irish moss, Watercress, and Bladderwrack, is extremely cleansing to the digestive system and equally illuminating to our inner sight. Plants of the water, sometimes known as seaweeds or algaes, such as Irish moss and Bladderwrack are loaded with vital minerals necessary for optimal functioning of the organism. Water is what distributes the nutrients throughout our body, so it comes as no surprise that such plants would be ideal for a pathwork such as this one. Watercress and Orange peel are both activators in this formulation. Watercress has antioxidant potential, ensuring that the work done by the other allies isn’t lost to a host of free radicals. Furthermore, they simultaneously treat respiration and health. Orange peel has similar qualities, while also supporting immunity and skin health. This concoction is a thorough potion that started as a dream and turned into a dance - a dance to guide us more profoundly and directly to the true essence of Self and the Mother source within.
