the story:

In tarot, Temperance is read as a card about moderation, balance, patience, synthesis of elements. There are of course more interpretations and, depending on if other cards are pulled in a reading, the signification of arcanum 14 can take on a myriad of meanings. Fundamentally, Temperance represents one with the capacity to dwell in two worlds at once — it suggests liminality and groundedness all at the same time, so while this card signifies a certain equilibrium, it also insinuates the way we are called to task in our endeavors and are required to assume responsibility in what we commit to. Temperance is moderation and thoroughness, patience and consistency, balance and discernment. This card follows Key 13: Death in the procession of the tarot which moreover gives us a hint that what we are alchemizing in Key 14 is the lessons life has taught us and the fertile ground death has afforded us. Temperance teaches us that death brings a certain humility illuminating of the ways we may have abused resources and even our gifts. Etymologically, to “temper” means “to bring to a proper or suitable state” and also “to mix correctly” — herein lie the alchemical overtones of this key. With Temperance, we are given a chance to try again but with more mindfulness, to be wise in our combinations for crafting healing remedies whether with our thoughts, words, actions, or creations. All this considered, the herbs used in this tincture bring forward a harmonic disposition, being especially nourishing to the nervous system following any moment of death, change, transformation, sudden upgrades. Holy basil aka Tulsi is the primary plant in this formula serving as a tonic for mind, heart, and full body. In Ayurvedic tradition, Holy basil is regarded as a transformative herb which can help us adjust to the rhythms of life’s ebb and flow. Tulsi is also protective of the heart, lowering blood pressure and easing us into calm — this is deeply reminiscent of the overall energetic signature of Key 14. Like most aromatics, this herbal accomplice can aid digestion, uplift our spirits, and clarify our psychoemotional aspects. Skullcap accentuates all of this. Another mint family plant, Skullcap is also a nervous system tonic and strengthener, helping to instill a sense of serenity and also being helpful to those who experience insomnia, anxiety, and the like. Skullcap has documented use in the treatment of epilepsy and other seizure-inducing conditions. The combination of Tulsi and Skullcap has also proven effective in reducing feelings of withdrawal from addiction to substances and even repetitive habits. The tempering quality of these is effective for brain health. Catnip is the other mint family plant here. In magickal traditions, Nepeta (Catnip) is employed for love magick, to bring peace into the home, and to help in conflict resolution within families — all of these uses being reflective of the otherwise physical healing medicine of this plant who has a balancing force. Like other mint family plants, Catnip also benefits the digestive system, the heart, and the immune system. Marshmallow root decoction furthermore exalts the tempering qualities of the tincture by soothing our internal processes, decreasing irritations, inflammations, and aggravations. Ashwaghanda is another one used in Ayurvedic tradition for yoga and meditation because they ease mental processes and calibrate our thinking into coherence. Further applications of this root lend themselves well as aphrodisiac which when paired with Rose and Orange peel is moreover enhanced. The sexual stamina intensifying property may seem counterintuitive in the process of Temperance, but our sexual energy is essential to the creative expression inherent in alchemical workings. All of these plants have more uses than can be enumerated here, but they essentially bring calm, promote creativity by increasing sexual energies, and also promote clear and truth-based decision making — all expressions of the codes in Key 14.
